Carmack Tweet on eMagin Microdisplays and gaming

FOV is what Oculomania is all about. Carmack used some prototype WUXGA eMagin Microdisplays way back when in a jerry rigged gaming HMD he and Blezinski tried out.  He obviously decided to sacrifice increases in distortion for a wider FOV. So, here comes the cell phone displays, the trend with Oculus and myriad imitators. However, at the Needham Conference eMagin CEO Sculley described using an eMagin HMD for gaming and in his words the experience of playing a First Person Shooter was "immersive". So I wonder how they accomplished that with a smaller format display. Tiled displays might do the trick, new prism design? I guess we'll have to wait for their SXGA digital successor to the Z800 to be unveiled to see what the basement dwellers have to say.

Thales Expands and Changes the Name of its US Business

Visonix would be the Division that interests us here. Their Scorpion HMD uses an eMagin SVGA OLED display. There was a moment when the Scorpion was considered as the Air Force's Service wide choice for an HMD for Rotory and Fixed Wing but it first appearance Fleet wide will be with the F-22 Raptor. Thales is currently partnering with Raytheon to develop an HMD solution for Helicopters based on the Scorpion.
